How to brief an installation

TL;DR

Start with the room, the crowd and the hours it runs. Everything else follows from those three.

Most installation briefs open with the screens. Start somewhere else: the room, the people in it and how long it has to run.

Start with the room

Ceiling height, sight lines, ambient light and where people walk in from decide more than any piece of hardware does. Get floor plans and photos before you design anything.

Plan for the loudest hour

An installation that works at 9am with ten people may fall apart at 2pm with three hundred. Brief for the peak, then check the quiet hours still look intentional.

Decide who runs it

Someone has to switch it on, reset it and fix it when it stalls. Name that person in the brief, and design the controls for them.

Test at full scale

A mock-up on a laptop proves the idea. It does not prove the brightness, the frame rate or the cable run. Budget a day on site before the doors open.
